Seven leaves a week

The sambar, rasam, kootu and payasam change every day and have followed the same weekly turn since the 1970s. Sunday adds a vada.

Same board, same batter, same leaf

S. Kalyanaraman opened the mess in 1968 with twelve seats and one sambar. His granddaughter Lakshmi Venkatesh runs it now, and still buys leaves from the same family in Theni. Takeaway started because the hall ran out of room at one o’clock, not because the meals changed.
