We draw every child we reach. Including the ones we lost.

Bright Futures runs 14 learning centres in Kanchipuram, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram and Dharmapuri districts. Since 2009 we have taught 3,412 children. 3,118 are still with us. 294 are not, and they are on this page too.

How to read this. One mark is one child. A filled mark is a child enrolled this term. A hollow mark is a child who stopped coming. Columns are built from the ground up, so the hollow ones sit on top.

The 3,412

Every child who has been through a Bright Futures centre since the first room opened behind the Uthiramerur bus stand in June 2009. Grouped by village, oldest centre first.

Most of the hollow marks appear after class VIII, and most of them are girls. That is the single hardest number in this report, and it is broken down honestly on the impact page.

What a Tuesday actually looks like

Centres open at 7:20 and close at five, in two shifts, because a good half of our children work alongside their families at one end of the day or the other. Nine of the fourteen centres have reliable power. All fourteen have a roof, which was not true in 2019.

13:10Pennagaram. Thangaraj sir teaches class IV under the tin roof while the new room is finished. It reaches 41°C in there by two.
15:20Kalasapakkam. Reading hour on the veranda. Nandhini, class V, was 14 months behind in June and is closing it at roughly a month a month.
06:55Mailam. The van collects eleven children from the Perumal Koil street stop. Eleven more walk.

We spent ₹33,21,200 more than we raised. The difference came out of reserves, which now cover 4.1 months of running costs instead of 7.2. We are not going to cut a centre to fix that, so we are asking more people for less money.

61
children stopped coming this year, against 44 last year. This got worse, not better.
5.4%
of everything we spent went on administration, salaries of the four office staff and the audit included.

I taught in a government school for thirty-one years. I always knew the exact week a child would stop coming. It was never about the child.
